Sue Thorne

Secretary

Sue is a native Georgian, born in Atlanta and raised in Marietta. She began playing clarinet in the 6th grade and by high school had switched to the alto clarinet. During high school, Sue played in the symphonic and marching bands at the now defunct Wills High School and was also in the Georgia All-State Band, 7th District Honor Band, and Cobb County Honor Band.

After high school, the clarinets were put away and Sue began dealing with the “real world.” She earned a B.A. in Humanities from the University of Alabama and worked for many years as an administrative secretary for the Cobb County School District. She has been married for 22 years to Bruce, a health and physical education teacher. They have one son who is a college student majoring in criminal justice and history.

In 2005, Sue pulled out her clarinet and tried to play again. It wasn’t pleasing to hear, but eventually she began to make actual clarinet sounds and decided to join an adult band. Sue has been playing bass clarinet with the East Cobb New Horizons Band since October, 2007, and with the Southern Winds since its inception in 2008. When she’s not playing her bass clarinet, Sue enjoys quilting, cross-stitch, genealogy, traveling, and reading every book she can get her hands on.
